Turkey our partner power

Prime Minister Erdoğan attending the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi asked for increasing the trade volume between both countries. President Putin said “Turkey is our priority partner and our partner power”.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s visit to Russia to attend the official opening of the 22nd Winter Olympic Games in Sochi was marked by the economic relations between the two countries. Russian President Vladimir Putin met PM Erdoğan before the presidential palace. Putin, at the warm meeting with Erdoğan, thanked Turkish construction companies for their contributions to the construction of Olympic facilities and stressed the importance of further developing bilateral relations.


Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the energy cooperation between the two countries and agreed to accelerate the building of Akkuyu power plant project. Emphasizing the cooperation at the energy area, PM Erdoğan said; “Especially our cooperation at energy sector is important. The trade volume between two countries is at a good level. Even if there is a slight regression, it is possible to overcome this”. Russia, showing its confidence to the stability in Turkey, showed its support by increasing its cash assets in Turkey to 2.8 billion USD. It is reported that Erdoğan has especially focused on natural gas prices during the meeting. The parties have agreed principally to continue the discussions regarding the cooperation in this field.


PM Erdoğan, reminding that the 2018 World Cup shall also be organized in Russia, stated that Turkish contractors could take an important role in constructing of the facilities for the tournament. Hearing positive reply from President Putin, PM Erdoğan wished the Olympic games with success and said “I believe the Olympic games to start tonight shall be the symbol of peace and freedoms”. Both leaders underlined the successes of the Turkish companies, which undertook major roles in construction of the Olympic facilities. The contribution of the Turkish companies in Russia’s preparation to the Olympic Games was praised while it is being reported that the Turkish companies have made more than 2 billion USD as profit.


Invited to Sochi by Putin, PM Erdoğan visited Russia for the second time in the course of 2 months. The two leaders who met at St. Petersburg in November 22, this time met in Sochi mainly to discuss Syria. PM Erdoğan renewed his call to Russia and Iran regarding Syrian crisis and said “the humanitarian issue in Syria is turning into a disaster. Russia should also take responsibility. We are witnessing one of the greatest tragedies of the human history. This must be stopped”. Erdoğan mentioned the torture photographs taken in Syria and said the views have proved the existence of a systematic genocide and said this was unacceptable. Both leaders had discussed Syria issue during their meeting in November and agreed that efforts should be focused on bringing peace to the people of Syria and improving the humanitarian situation.


Emphasizing that Turkey is Russia’s priority partner, Vladimir Putin said: “We have good relations with potentials. Last year 4 million tourists visited Turkey from Russia. Turkish construction companies have undertaken projects worth 50 billion USD in Russia since 1990s. I would like to express my thanks to the Turkish companies operating in Sochi. I should express that our experts are happy with the quality of the work done by the Turkish companies. They did their work professionally. They contributed greatly to our preparations for the Olympic Games without even resting or sleeping. This in fact is our common power”.
